Hi, Scott Reed here from Feed Central. Today we’re storing straw into our sheds for Feed Central long-term customers. Some of the things we’ve got to make sure we do on our Hay Storage Safety is right moisture. They’ve got to be at a maximum of 18% moisture and below.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen quite a number of hay and straw fires, shed fires, which is very devastating for all involved. This is one of the things we try and do to keep away from it.

As part of what we do prior to them getting put into storage, especially within a shed, we go through and moisture test the majority of the bales and make sure they’re all under 18% moisture. Then, we can safely store them away because once you go over 18%, you have a high risk of fires, and spoilage from there.

Also, you want to make sure you’re looking at your consistency, your integrity of the bale, making sure they’re nice and strong and square. Good, strong six-string still attached. No fluffy bales or anything like that. The visual things that just help you stack into your shed, help your storage. That way they’ll stack there, store there, for a good 12 months plus.

With the amount of shed fires that have been around for the last couple of weeks, Feed Central state that we are willing to help out and support where we can. If you’ve got any queries or questions, please contact our office and have a look through the website.
